Almost from the beginning of their history, Jews have been subjected to periods of hardship and turbulence. Sometimes they were expelled from Israel and forced to live in other lands. Jews dispersed to live in other countries are called “the Diaspora.” During these times the core of Jewish culture survived, however it was influenced by the cultures of the countries they were temporarily living among. This exposure to other cultures has added a unique dimension to Israeli jewelry. It has the look of both ancient and modern; distinctly Jewish and yet influenced by other countries and cultures.
The Jewish Star (Star of David) is a good example. It is an ancient symbol, yet it is reflected everywhere in modern Israel. It is traditionally a symbol of Judaism, yet it is embraced by other cultures. A Star of David pendant can be seen around the neck of a Jewish grandmother, or a young girl at her Bat Mitzvah, age makes no difference. A Star of David pendant can also be seen around the neck of women (and men) of other religions and cultures who want to show their support of Israel and the Jewish people, or simply because it is a beautiful piece of jewelry. Whether worn for sacred, fashion, or national pride reasons, a Star of David pendant has universal appeal.
